The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to motorists, advising them against transporting petrol in jerrycans while in transit to prevent fire disasters.
Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi State, emphasized this caution during an event commemorating the West African Road Safety Organisation (WARSO) day in the state.
He highlighted the dangers associated with carrying fuel in jerrycans while traveling, pointing to recent fatalities in the state resulting from road traffic crashes.

Oyedeji urged both passengers and drivers to avoid this practice, particularly during the current fuel scarcity, in order to ensure their safe arrival at their destinations.
The WARSO day event, marking the organization’s 16th anniversary, aimed to facilitate the exchange of information and experiences among member states, raise awareness about the effects of road traffic crashes, and promote the establishment of road safety bodies in West Africa.
The sector commander outlined the command’s efforts to enhance the transportation system in Kogi, including engaging with stakeholders and enforcing speed limit devices on commercial vehicles to reduce road traffic crashes.
Oyedeji identified speeding, overloading, and dangerous driving as major causes of road traffic crashes in the state.
He appealed to the motoring public to demonstrate good behavior, cooperate with, and support the FRSC to ensure road safety.
He stated, “If motorists will display good character and drive safely on our highways, road traffic crashes will drastically reduce if not eradicated for the safety of lives and property.”
The FRSC has been conducting sensitization campaigns in various locations, including worship centers and motor parks, to promote road safety.
Additionally, the command recently conducted a public enlightenment campaign at the Lokoja Mega Terminal (LMT) park to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 5 percent.
