The Federal Government, through the National Council on Climate Change, has thrown its support behind a groundbreaking initiative aimed at tackling environmental challenges and improving livelihoods across Nigeria.
GreenPlinth Africa Limited, in collaboration with its partners, has launched a massive Article 6.4 project to distribute 80 million clean cookstoves free of charge to households nationwide.
This initiative, touted as one of the world’s largest single clean cooking system projects, targets combating the detrimental health and environmental impacts of traditional cooking methods, including indoor air pollution and deforestation.

Olawale Akinwumi, President and CEO of GreenPlinth Africa, emphasized that providing clean cookstoves would significantly improve the lives of millions of Nigerians, especially women and children, who bear the brunt of traditional cooking practices’ harmful effects. Adoption of clean cookstoves is expected to enhance indoor air quality, reduce respiratory illnesses, and contribute to mitigating climate change by lowering carbon emissions.
Salisu Dahiru, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, hailed the initiative as a crucial step towards greenhouse gas emission reduction, sustainable forest development, and job creation in Nigeria. Endorsing the Improved And Efficient Cooking Energy Solution For Nigeria – an Article 6.4 Project, Dahiru underscored its alignment with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and sustainable development goals.
Victor Fodeke, Vice President and GMD of Greenplinth Africa, highlighted the project’s benefits for vulnerable communities, emphasizing improved health conditions and tangible contributions to global climate change efforts. The initiative, besides distributing clean cookstoves, includes an afforestation campaign aiming to plant four billion economic trees nationwide. This multifaceted approach seeks to combat deforestation, promote sustainable land management, and create economic opportunities, thus stimulating economic growth and addressing environmental challenges.
Fodeke further emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the project, noting that it would be fully financed by Carbon Credits, making it a foreign exchange earner for Nigeria. This initiative marks the first time such a large-scale efficient clean cookstoves project is launched, with every household receiving full funding.
