In the lead-up to the Edo State governorship election scheduled for 21 September 2024, Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata has declared his unwavering independence from political benefactors and godfathers.
During an interview on Channels Television’s programme “Politics Today,” Akpata emphatically stated that if elected, he would not be influenced or controlled by any external forces other than the will of the people.
Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), stressed his commitment to serving the people of Edo State without the interference often associated with political sponsorship.

“That is one reason why the people of Edo can trust a Labour Party government—because we are answerable to the people,” Akpata asserted. “I have no strings attached. I am not answerable to any godfather or political benefactor.”
His remarks come amid a fiercely contested race that features prominent candidates such as Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akpata’s stance is a significant departure from the political norm in Nigeria, where allegiance to powerful sponsors and former officeholders is often seen as a prerequisite for political success.
Akpata underscored this distinction, pointing out that unlike his opponents, who are perceived to be backed by influential figures including former and sitting governors, he owes his allegiance solely to the electorate.
Akpata also addressed speculation regarding the funding of his campaign, firmly denying any financial backing from Governor Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent governor of Edo State. Obaseki, whose preferred candidate is PDP’s Ighodalo, has been a focal point in the political discourse surrounding the election.
Responding to accusations of being Obaseki’s agent, Akpata clarified, “Initially, I was said to be the agent of Governor Obaseki, we were able to debunk that. Today, I was said to be sponsored by the APC.
I think it is conspiracy theorising that is most stupid. I am funding myself and I have friends who believe in me and that we can do much better in Edo.”
Akpata’s emphasis on self-reliance and integrity resonates with a growing segment of the electorate that is disillusioned with the entrenched political class.
His approach represents a broader trend within the Labour Party, which has positioned itself as an alternative to the established parties in Nigeria.
By distancing himself from the traditional power brokers, Akpata aims to appeal to voters who are eager for change and who are frustrated by the pervasive influence of political godfathers in the governance of Edo State.
This election presents a critical juncture for Edo State, as it navigates its future leadership amidst significant economic and social challenges.
Akpata’s candidacy is notable not just for his professional credentials as a distinguished lawyer and former NBA President, but also for his commitment to running a campaign that prioritises accountability and direct engagement with the citizens.
He has vowed to tackle issues such as unemployment, infrastructure development, and education reform, pledging to implement policies that reflect the actual needs and aspirations of the people.
As the election date approaches, the spotlight remains on Akpata’s ability to maintain his independence and execute a grassroots campaign that can challenge the established political order.
His message of freedom from political godfathers is not only a campaign slogan but a direct challenge to the status quo that has long defined Nigerian politics.
The outcome of the Edo governorship election will not only determine the next leader of the state but will also test the electorate’s appetite for a new kind of politics—one that is driven by the people and for the people, without the overbearing shadow of political benefactors.
In summary, Olumide Akpata’s candidacy is distinguished by his pledge to uphold autonomy and accountability in leadership.
He remains steadfast in his conviction that the people of Edo State deserve a government that is free from the manipulations of political godfathers, promising a fresh start and a governance style that is transparent, people-focused, and truly independent.
