The Kwara State Police Command has announced its readiness to enforce restrictions on the movement of people and vehicles ahead of the local council elections scheduled for Saturday, 21st September 2024.
In a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, it was revealed that the movement restrictions would be effective from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the day of the elections.
According to the statement, the curfew is aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections and safeguarding public peace.
“This measure has been put in place to ensure the security and smooth conduct of the electoral process,” DSP Toun said.
The police clarified that certain exemptions would be made, specifically for those involved in essential services.
This includes accredited election officials, authorised media personnel, election observers, and emergency responders.
Additionally, armed security personnel assigned to VIPs will not be permitted to escort their principals to polling units during the elections, a move designed to maintain the integrity of the voting process.
“We urge all residents to comply with this directive,” the statement continued, “and we emphasize that any individual found violating the curfew will face the full weight of the law.”
The command also advised members of the public to report any irregularities, concerns, or suspicious activities at polling units via the command’s emergency contact lines.
The police stressed that public cooperation is essential for the success of the election, urging residents to act responsibly to maintain peace and order during the important civic exercise.
