President Bola Tinubu has assured Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the reappointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she begins her second term.
Tinubu extended his congratulations to Okonjo-Iweala on her unanimous re-election, emphasizing that her appointment reflects the international community’s trust in her leadership.
Okonjo-Iweala, who made history in 2021 as the first African and first woman to head the 164-member WTO, will begin her second four-year term on September 1, 2025, after her first term concludes on August 31, 2025.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Okonjo-Iweala for her contributions to global trade and economic development.
The statement reads:
“President Bola Tinubu congratulates Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
“The renowned development economist and global finance expert made history in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member WTO.
“Her unanimous appointment for a second four-year term demonstrates the trust and confidence the international community places in her leadership to advance multilateral trade for sustainable global development.”
The President expressed confidence in Okonjo-Iweala’s ability to strengthen the WTO’s role as a pillar of inclusive global economic growth and governance in the years ahead.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the WTO’s mission and assured Okonjo-Iweala of steadfast backing as she continues her bold reforms and efforts to promote equitable global trade practices and international cooperation.
