A High Court in Minna, Niger State, has sentenced Abubakar Muhammad-Buba to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering his father.
The convict was arraigned on October 9, 2023, on charges of murder, theft, and other related offenses.
According to court proceedings, Muhammad-Buba was arrested by officers of the Korokpa Police Unit in Chanchaga village while attempting to collect money from the sale of his late father’s land.
The prosecution revealed that Muhammad-Buba stabbed his father to death with a knife, dismembered his body, and hid the remains in a bush before dumping them near the Tagwai Dam water source in Chanchaga.
After the murder, Muhammad-Buba falsely informed his father’s close associate, Naje Mohammed SD Mambo, who is also the head of the state’s mineral extraction association, that his father had been kidnapped.
He demanded a ransom, which he later collected.
Muhammad-Buba further claimed that his father had been released but injured and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Gwagwalada.
However, Mambo uncovered the lies and reported the matter to the police, leading to Muhammad-Buba’s arrest.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Mohammed S.A. Mohammed stated that the prosecution had convincingly proven that Muhammad-Buba was guilty of the crime.
While noting the gravity of the offense, the judge explained that although the death penalty was justified, he exercised leniency by sentencing the convict to life imprisonment.
