Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has given an update on the health of Pope Francis, who remains hospitalized with pneumonia.
The 88-year-old Pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital last Friday with a respiratory infection affecting both lungs.
Pneumonia, a serious infection, can inflame and scar the lungs, causing chest pain and difficulty breathing.

Providing reassurance about his condition, Meloni stated on Wednesday that Pope Francis was “alert and responsive.”
“We joked as always. He hasn’t lost his proverbial sense of humor,” she said, adding that she was “very happy” with his recovery progress.
Meloni also extended her best wishes for the Pope’s speedy recovery on behalf of the Italian government and the entire nation.
Earlier, the Vatican disclosed that medical tests and a chest X-ray had revealed “a complex picture” of the Pope’s health. Reports indicate that Pope Francis has privately expressed concerns about his ability to survive the illness.
