The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has successfully removed a dredging pipe obstructing navigation on the state’s waterways. The move was part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety and improve the free flow of water transport in Lagos.
The dredging pipe, which had posed risks to boat operators and commuters, was identified as a major hazard along a frequently used route. LASWA officials, in collaboration with marine safety teams, carried out the operation to clear the obstruction and restore safe passage for watercraft.
According to LASWA, the removal of the pipe aligns with the agency’s commitment to ensuring that Lagos waterways remain navigable and free of illegal or abandoned structures that could endanger lives. The agency reiterated that it will continue monitoring waterways and enforcing regulations to prevent unauthorized activities that could disrupt transport operations.
Stakeholders in the water transport sector have commended LASWA for its swift response, noting that such proactive measures are crucial in preventing accidents and maintaining public confidence in water travel. Many boat operators and passengers had previously raised concerns about the risks posed by abandoned dredging equipment and other obstructions on key water routes.
As part of broader safety initiatives, LASWA has urged dredging companies and other waterway users to adhere to state guidelines, ensuring that equipment and infrastructure do not interfere with navigation. The agency has also reaffirmed its commitment to routine patrols, enforcement actions, and public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting safe and efficient water transport in Lagos.
