Veteran journalist and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has criticized the decision of the PDP Governors’ Forum to distance itself from the newly formed opposition coalition spearheaded by former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Momodu, while speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Monday evening, expressed concern that the PDP governors’ refusal to join forces with other opposition leaders could be interpreted as tacit support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Recall that a coalition involving key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, was recently announced as a strategic alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, following a meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the PDP Governors’ Forum publicly declared it would not be part of the coalition effort.
Reacting to the development, Momodu said, “Opposition leaders are very determined to work together this time around.
The truth of the matter is that Atiku cannot do it alone, Peter Obi cannot do it alone, and Kwankwaso cannot do it alone. Whosoever wants to run must find a way to pay the APC back in its own coin.”
He added, “If our governors are saying, ‘Oh, we don’t go into coalitions,’ it means you are probably working for a Tinubu presidency.”
Citing historical examples, Momodu warned against fear-driven political inactivity, saying, “People panic because of Tinubu – ‘Oh, they’re going to use EFCC, they’re going to arrest me.’ But power is never handed over on a platter.
We all like to read about Mandela and the Mau Mau struggle, but forget that it takes sacrifice.”
Momodu also cautioned politicians against defecting for personal gain. “Any governor, senator, or House member who may be tempted to jump ship may jump into the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean,” he said.
He concluded by urging opposition forces to unite, stressing that their goal is achievable if they work together with determination and courage.
