Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has come out to say that he wanted the number 10 jersey to emulate his idols, Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney. Recall that he recently changed his number from No. 20 to No. 10 ahead of the Club World Cup, and fans have been reacting.
According to him, he has always loved watching Messi and Rooney play football, and both players did a very good job of making the jersey number iconic for upcoming footballers.

Palmer added that his comment about being sick of going backwards and sideways was not a dig at Enzo Maresca.
His words, “Messi, the big one, Rooney and players like that. It’s just an iconic number. I wore No. 10 all my life growing up and I just like the number.”
On Maresca, “We had a joke about it. My comments weren’t towards the manager or anything. It was just a personal thing. I felt like in the game, I was maybe being a bit safe. So that’s where the comment came from.
I wanted to get the ball and try something different than previously. Obviously you can’t take the p— and do like whatever you want and stuff, but I feel like he [Maresca] still gives you a little bit of room to try and see what I can do.”
WOW.
Chelsea Football Club is an English professional football club based in Fulham, West London. Founded in 1905, they play their home games at Stamford Bridge.
The club competes in the Premier League, the top division of English football. They won their first major honour, the League championship, in 1955. The club won the FA Cup for the first time in 1970, their first European honour, the Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1971, and became the third English club to win the Club World Cup in 2022.
On 7 May 2022, Chelsea confirmed that terms have been agreed for a new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss, to acquire the club. The group was later known as BlueCo.
The UK government approved the £4.25bn takeover, ending Abramovich’s 19-year ownership of the club. Bruce Buck, who served as chairman since 2003, was replaced by Boehly, while long-serving club director and de facto sporting director Marina Granovskaia left, as did Petr Čech from the role of technical and performance advisor.
