The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of acting out of fear of losing power rather than genuine concern for Nigerians, following the government’s recent pledge to tackle food insecurity and boost exports.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, and shared on X, the party dismissed the government’s newly announced reforms as a scramble for survival driven by the rising popularity of the ADC and other opposition forces.
The ADC’s reaction comes after the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, announced that the federal government would take steps to remove bottlenecks hindering food security and exports.

The opposition party questioned the timing of the announcement, describing it as politically motivated.
“On Saturday, when Bayo Onanuga tweeted that, moving forward, all bottlenecks hindering ‘the realization of the Tinubu administration’s potential’ would be removed to enable food sovereignty and export, he didn’t just issue a statement — he issued a confession,” the statement read.
The ADC argued that Onanuga’s remarks suggested the administration had deliberately chosen inaction while millions of Nigerians struggled with hunger and economic hardship.
“This is not genuine reform or leadership but a desperate attempt to stay afloat after being overwhelmed by its own shortcomings,” the party said. “It took the emergence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the growing momentum of a united opposition to push this government into action. It wasn’t the hunger of millions that moved them — it was fear. Fear of the 2027 elections.”
The party further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of intentionally using poverty as a political weapon, claiming the administration’s new promises were designed to win votes ahead of the next election.
“If the problems blocking food supply could have been fixed earlier, why did the government leave them for so long while people went hungry and businesses failed?” the ADC asked. “This is not a government reacting to an urgent national crisis — it is a political machine managing optics. Nigerians, shine your eyes.”
The ADC alleged that the President has effectively started campaigning two years ahead of the 2027 polls, warning citizens to demand real solutions instead of what it called “political showmanship.”
“The President knows he’s in trouble. He knows Nigerians have had enough,” the statement concluded. “Nigerians must hold this government accountable and not be swayed by last-minute promises.”
