Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has reflected on the state’s remarkable transformation, describing its growth over the past 38 years as a source of pride and national recognition.
Akwa Ibom was created on 23 September 1987 by the then Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd).
In a statewide broadcast on Tuesday to mark the 38th anniversary of its creation, Governor Eno said the state has evolved from what he called a “glorified village” into one of Nigeria’s leading sub-national entities, commending successive administrations for their roles in its steady development.

“Thirty-eight years ago, this state, especially the capital city of Uyo, was for all intents and purposes, a glorified village – a rural backwater bereft of modern infrastructure. Today, thirty-eight years later, our state has become the destination of choice, the nation’s best kept secret,” Eno said.
Highlighting the progress made, he noted the transformation of the road network, emergence of modern housing estates, and the rise of Ibom Air as a symbol of excellence in the aviation sector.
“In place of dusty narrow streets, some of which looked like bush tracks, we now have possibly the best road network in the nation. Our people, long thought to be mostly good at performing domestic chores, have all arisen and are holding commanding positions across the world in various professions,” the governor added.
Governor Eno also pointed to the state’s sports recognition, noting that Akwa Ibom has become a designated FIFA and CAF host for international football matches, a development he described as a testament to its rising profile.
Reeling out projects implemented under his administration, he announced that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, would commission the newly completed 15.13km Ikot Otomo–Azumini Road and other internal roads in Ika Local Government Area.
The governor urged citizens to remain united as the state continues its development journey, cautioning against divisive politics.
“As the political season unfolds, I urge us not to allow the flaming passion of politics to divide us. Elections will come and go, but the Akwa Ibom spirit of love and brotherhood will remain. We are running Akwa Ibom United across party lines,” he said.
Eno further called on leaders and stakeholders to avoid inflammatory rhetoric, urging them instead to embrace the values of love and unity encapsulated in the state anthem.
“Our economic fundamentals are strong and resilient as we ARISE together to build a golden future that unlocks our potentials,” he declared, while paying glowing tributes to past governors for laying the foundations of progress.
