Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has disclosed that his administration has so far paid ₦27 billion out of the ₦47 billion in pension and death benefits inherited from previous administrations.
Speaking on Tuesday during the launch of the fifth tranche of payments, Governor Yusuf assured that all outstanding gratuities and death benefits would be cleared before 2027, adding that elaborate arrangements have been made to achieve the goal.
The governor revealed that the latest tranche would cover entitlements dating back to 2017, with ₦5 billion already released for 1,026 beneficiaries.

“Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, the present administration has settled ₦22 billion in four batches for 12,433 beneficiaries. With this fifth disbursement, we have now cleared over 50 per cent of the inherited arrears,” Yusuf stated.
In addition to the payments, the governor announced a youth empowerment programme targeting over 4,000 young people across the 44 local government areas of the state.
Each beneficiary is expected to receive a start-up capital of ₦150,000 to support small-scale businesses.
He further disclosed that the government would commence a second tranche of financial support for councillors at the grassroots level, describing it as part of his commitment to strengthening local leadership.
Governor Yusuf also reaffirmed the continuation of the monthly women’s empowerment scheme, under which 5,200 women from across the state will each receive ₦50,000 to support small business ventures.
He urged all beneficiaries to prepare for the roll-out of the initiatives, stressing the administration’s resolve to ease the suffering of pensioners, deceased workers’ families, and vulnerable groups.
