Wema Bank Plc has announced the commencement of entries for its annual Teachers’ Challenge, an initiative designed to celebrate and reward innovation, creativity, and excellence in Nigeria’s education sector. The program, which coincides with activities marking the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, provides teachers across the country with a platform to showcase their unique methods of teaching and their impact on students.
According to the bank, the Teachers’ Challenge is part of its broader commitment to social impact and corporate responsibility, particularly in education. The initiative encourages educators to submit entries demonstrating innovative approaches to classroom management, learning delivery, technology adoption, and overall contribution to student development. Winners will be selected based on originality, creativity, and measurable outcomes of their teaching strategies.

Wema Bank explained that the challenge is open to teachers across public and private institutions in primary, secondary, and tertiary education levels. The program is expected to attract a large number of applications as educators continue to explore new ways of adapting to global changes in learning, especially in light of advancements in digital tools and post-pandemic shifts toward blended learning models.
Announcing the opening of entries, Wema Bank’s Executive Director of Retail and Digital Business, Tunde Mabawonku, highlighted the importance of teachers in shaping future generations. He said the Teachers’ Challenge is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of the dedication and resilience of Nigerian educators. “We recognize the tireless efforts of teachers who, despite numerous challenges, continue to inspire and guide students toward achieving their dreams. This challenge gives us an opportunity to spotlight their remarkable contributions while motivating others to embrace innovation in teaching,” Mabawonku said.
The Teachers’ Challenge has grown significantly since its inception, with past editions drawing participation from teachers in different regions of Nigeria. Winners of previous editions have been recognized for integrating creative techniques such as gamified learning, digital teaching aids, inclusive education methods, and locally developed content that resonates with students’ everyday experiences.
Wema Bank also revealed that this year’s edition would focus more on the role of technology in education. Teachers are expected to highlight how they have leveraged digital platforms, e-learning tools, and interactive content to enhance classroom experiences and improve learning outcomes. The bank said this reflects its own commitment to innovation, as seen through ALAT, its flagship digital banking platform that has redefined banking in Nigeria.
Education experts have praised the initiative, noting that Nigeria’s education system faces significant challenges, including overcrowded classrooms, inadequate infrastructure, limited teacher training, and poor access to digital tools in rural areas. They argue that rewarding teachers who are breaking barriers and introducing new solutions is a critical step toward strengthening the system.
One education consultant, Dr. Adaobi Eze, said initiatives like Wema Bank’s Teachers’ Challenge bridge a critical gap by motivating teachers to innovate despite systemic limitations. “Teachers are often underappreciated, yet they hold the key to preparing future leaders. By providing recognition and rewards, this initiative empowers them to push boundaries and contribute to transforming education in Nigeria,” she noted.
The competition will run for several weeks, during which entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges made up of education professionals, policymakers, and innovators. Shortlisted candidates will later be invited to present their teaching models, after which winners will be announced during an award ceremony in October.
Winners are expected to receive cash prizes, teaching resources, and recognition certificates, while their stories will be shared widely to inspire other educators. Wema Bank added that beyond the prizes, the Teachers’ Challenge creates a platform for knowledge exchange, enabling teachers to learn from one another and replicate successful practices across the country.
Teachers across Nigeria have expressed excitement about the opening of entries. Some said the recognition motivates them to keep striving for excellence in a profession that is often overshadowed by other sectors. “This is the kind of encouragement we need,” said a secondary school teacher in Abuja. “We know our challenges, but it feels good to be recognized for the little innovations we bring into our classrooms.”
With entries now open, Wema Bank has encouraged teachers to apply before the deadline and showcase their contributions to the development of education in Nigeria. The bank reaffirmed that its goal is to support teachers in shaping young minds while promoting creativity and innovation in the country’s education sector.
The Teachers’ Challenge is expected to culminate in a grand finale where Nigeria’s most outstanding educators will be honored, further cementing Wema Bank’s reputation as a socially responsible institution committed to empowering people and communities.
