The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has said that the recent wave of defections by some governors and opposition figures to the All Progressives Congress, APC, does not guarantee electoral success for the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.
CUPP Secretary-General, Peter Ameh, stated this on Thursday in Abuja while reacting to the growing number of defections from opposition parties to the APC.
According to him, political survival cannot be achieved through cross-carpeting but through genuine service to the people.

“Nigerians hold the ultimate authority to decide who governs them. No defection can guarantee political survival for any leader who has lost touch with the people,” Ameh said.
He described the 2023 general elections as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that voters increasingly based their choices on performance and personal conviction rather than political party affiliation.
Ameh pointed out that the emergence of independent-minded candidates who defeated established politicians in 2023 reflected the growing political awareness of the electorate.
“Voters in Enugu and Bayelsa are politically sophisticated and guided by performance, not propaganda. No amount of external influence or federal backing can override the will of the people,” he added.
The CUPP scribe urged politicians to focus on delivering good governance and earning the trust of the electorate, rather than relying on party defections or federal connections to win elections.
