The Federal Government has released N2.31 billion to federal universities to settle outstanding arrears owed to academic and non-academic staff.
The disbursement was confirmed in a statement on Thursday by Kamorudeen Yusuf, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, citing comments from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
According to the minister, the funds were processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, and universities are expected to begin receiving payments immediately.

Alausa said the gesture underscores President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to transparent reforms that prioritise staff welfare and long-term financial sustainability in the education sector.
He added that the administration is concluding processes for the release of third-party deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management system.
The minister also disclosed that Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) will be fully integrated into university salaries by 2026 to ensure timely and predictable payments. He noted that funding for the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities project has been sustained.
Alausa reaffirmed that the government’s engagement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions is ongoing, stressing that agreements would remain within realistic budgetary limits to maintain sector stability.
The development comes days after ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike following renewed negotiations with the Federal Government.
