A member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Fasiu Bakene, has expressed optimism that the ongoing crisis rocking the party will soon be laid to rest.
Bakene, a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, gave the assurance in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abeokuta, insisting that despite recent defections, the PDP would emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He noted that internal conflicts were not peculiar to the PDP, adding that the party had the internal capacity to resolve its differences amicably.

Reacting to the expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, during the national convention in Ibadan, Bakene said the action was overdue.
“With the emergence of the new National Chairman, all rifts shall soon be resolved, notwithstanding the gale of defections,” he said.
He accused the expelled leaders of engaging in actions that consistently undermined the party and violated its constitution.
“It’s long overdue. Their utterances, actions, and constant breach of the PDP constitution over the years ought to have been checked. They have demonstrated their skill to kill the same party that made them relevant in the political space,” he said.
Bakene added that their removal would help restore discipline and rebuild confidence within the PDP.
“They enjoyed demarketing the party. Their expulsion will definitely restore discipline and advance the party. Their level of impunity contributed to the loss of interest and doubt about progress within the party,” he noted.
The PDP has been grappling with a widening internal crisis following its national convention, which produced new leadership opposed by a faction aligned with Wike.
