The National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Julius Abure, has commended the successful conduct of the party’s congresses held across 35 states of the federation, describing the exercise as a major milestone for internal democracy.
Abure, in a statement issued by the party’s spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, said the congresses—which began with ward congresses on Tuesday and concluded on Saturday—were free, fair and devoid of interference.

He noted that the National Monitoring Team had not received any adverse report from any state throughout the exercise.
According to him, the congresses, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies, were widely acknowledged as one of the most transparent internal elections conducted by any Nigerian political party in recent times.
“We are happy that party leaders across the states complied with all laid-down rules, ensuring that only the choices of party members emerged at all levels,” Abure said.
“This Congress was a test run of the reforms introduced under my leadership, and we are happy that it worked. We have insisted that no individual is bigger than the party and that every member must submit to the party’s authority.”
He explained that Abia State was excluded from the exercise after some individuals allegedly working with the state government procured a court order aimed at halting the process.
“As a law-abiding party, we have chosen to obey the order. Our legal team has been directed to take steps to vacate it as soon as possible so that congresses can be held in Abia,” he said.
Abure expressed confidence that the party is now better positioned ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Labour Party is ready for the 2027 general election as we have constructively put our challenges behind us,” he added.
He urged members to support the newly elected executives across the states to build on the party’s performance in the last general election.
