The Caretaker National Vice-Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has said the party is stepping up efforts to rebuild internal cohesion and forge broad political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ogidi made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), where he said the PDP remains committed to defending Nigeria’s democracy and repositioning itself as a strong opposition party despite internal challenges.

He acknowledged that the party is currently facing some internal disagreements but stressed that such issues would not derail its wider objective of safeguarding democratic governance and restoring public confidence.
According to him, the PDP is fully aware of the gravity of the country’s political situation and is determined to meet the expectations of Nigerians who view the party as a stabilising force in the democratic process.
“Yes, today we have some pockets of trouble in the PDP, but we are resolute and we believe in God because we know that we are the only viable opposition,” Ogidi said.
“We are going to fight for that cause; we will do whatever it takes to ensure that we have democracy. If we do not have democracy, then we will have a banana republic.
“We understand this, and because of that, we will not disappoint the people. We are determined,” he added.
Ogidi disclosed that the party plans to reach out to members of other political parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as part of its alliance-building strategy.
“We are going to reach out to anybody reachable in the other political parties, including the ruling APC. We want to see what we can take away from these parties; else, this country will face more serious challenges,” he said.
He noted that the PDP’s major focus ahead of the 2027 polls would be the protection of democracy, promotion of national unity and the provision of a credible alternative to the ruling party.
Ogidi also accused the APC of placing greater emphasis on electoral victories than on governance, questioning why the ruling party appeared more focused on political campaigns less than two years into its tenure.
He warned that continued erosion of democratic institutions could lead to instability, assuring that the PDP would do everything within its capacity to prevent such an outcome. (NAN)
