Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has urged youths in the state to shun violence and resist attempts by politicians to recruit them as political thugs.
Ortom gave the advice on Saturday while speaking at the burial of the former Chairman of the Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Aloysius Wuam, held in Mbagwaza, Ushongo Local Government Area.
The former governor cautioned that young people should not allow themselves to be manipulated into attacking political opponents.

He maintained that anyone seeking to carry out violent attacks against rivals should first present their own children to lead such actions.
Ortom also condemned the growing disruption of church services and other public gatherings in parts of the state, warning that the trend could lead to avoidable crises if not urgently addressed.
He noted that Benue State was already grappling with widespread destruction and killings in communities allegedly caused by invading militant Fulani herdsmen, stressing that the state could not afford additional political instability as the 2027 general elections approach.
The former governor further advised traditional rulers to refrain from partisan politics and instead uphold their constitutional role as neutral custodians of culture and royal fathers to the people.
Paying tribute to the late Wuam, Ortom described him as a man of remarkable character whose life reflected dedication, loyalty, and strong commitment to justice, unity, and service to the people.
According to him, Wuam’s calm disposition and unwavering belief in teamwork made him a stabilising force within the party.
In his condolence message, Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, described the deceased as a committed public servant whose contributions to the political development of Benue State would remain memorable.
Moro also called on those aspiring to govern Benue in 2027 to prioritise the interest of the state above personal ambitions.
The Benue State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ezekiel Adaji, said Wuam’s legacy of service, integrity and political mentorship would continue to inspire members of the party.
Other dignitaries who spoke at the funeral included the Tor Kwande, Ambrose Pine Iortyer; the member representing Mata State Constituency, Simon Gabo; and the senator representing Benue North-East Senatorial District, Emmanuel Udende, who was represented at the event.
