The Kano State Police Command has warned residents, particularly young people, against the growing practice of roller skating on highways, bridges, road construction sites and other restricted areas across Kano metropolis.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.
The command said it had observed with concern the increasing number of juveniles skating on major roads and, in some cases, holding onto moving vehicles for speed and excitement, describing the trend as dangerous and life-threatening.

According to the police, while roller skating is a legitimate recreational activity, engaging in it on busy highways exposes both skaters and other road users to serious risks.
The command noted that major roads are designed for vehicular movement and not recreational activities, adding that roller skates offer limited control and braking ability in fast-moving traffic conditions.
“Major roads are designed for vehicular movement, and roller skates offer limited control and braking, making collisions with cars and trucks highly likely,” the statement read.
The police also expressed concern over the use of roads and bridges currently under construction for skating and similar activities, noting that such locations lack dedicated facilities and safety measures.
It further condemned the practice of some youths holding onto moving vehicles while skating, warning that the behaviour is reckless and has resulted in fatal accidents in other parts of the country.
The command urged parents, guardians, school authorities and community leaders to educate children and wards on the dangers associated with the practice.
“Parents, guardians, schools, and community leaders are strongly advised to caution their children and wards against this dangerous practice,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police warned that the command would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found obstructing traffic, endangering public safety or engaging in activities capable of causing harm to themselves or others.
He also encouraged residents to report cases of reckless skating and other dangerous activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines for prompt intervention.
The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order across the state.
