A civil society organisation, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify the status of the academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2023 general election.
The group, which said it is committed to promoting good governance and democratic accountability, disclosed that it had written to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, seeking clarification on issues surrounding the President’s educational records and eligibility for future elections.

In a letter dated June 19, 2026, and signed by its Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Kalu Agu, the organisation urged the electoral body to address what it described as lingering concerns over the authenticity of certificates attributed to Tinubu.
According to the group, its request is aimed at ensuring transparency and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CFRPA alleged that discrepancies exist in the academic records submitted by the President, particularly regarding claims about schools attended before his admission to Chicago State University.
The organisation further argued that INEC, as the body responsible for regulating elections and political parties, should provide clarity on the legal implications of any disputed credentials submitted by candidates seeking elective office.
The group cited provisions of the 1999 Constitution, including Sections 137(1)(g), 137(1)(j), and 285(14), which relate to the qualification and disqualification of candidates for elective positions.
It also referenced records released by Chicago State University following a United States court order obtained during litigation involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar after the 2023 presidential election.
According to the group, the electoral commission should determine whether any issues arising from the certificates submitted by the President could affect his eligibility to contest future elections.
CFRPA disclosed that it had also written to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, requesting clarification regarding the President’s NYSC discharge certificate.
The organisation warned that if INEC fails to respond to its request, it may seek legal redress to compel the commission to state its position on the matter.
“We are requesting a legal clarification of the effects of the certificates submitted by President Bola Tinubu on his eligibility for the 2027 presidential election,” the group stated in the letter.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued an official response to the allegations and requests contained in the letter.
