Nigeria’s Democracy Must Survive Despite Challenges — Seriake Dickson

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has said Nigeria’s democracy must survive despite the challenges confronting the country’s political system.

Dickson made the assertion in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Wednesday.

According to the former Bayelsa State governor, the NDC is currently confronting what he described as legal and contrived actions by anti-democratic forces, but expressed confidence that the situation would eventually pass.

“The NDC is dealing with the legal and contrived shenanigans of anti-democratic forces. The storm shall pass and become a story of the past,” he stated.

Dickson said he trusts the judiciary to uphold the rule of law and resist any attempt to use the courts as instruments to undermine democracy.

He also lamented that some individuals he had supported and mentored over the years had allegedly turned against him by using state institutions to persecute opponents, remove people from office and spread propaganda.

The former governor further alleged that acts of victimisation and political retaliation were being carried out against innocent citizens.

“Nigeria’s democracy must survive. Multi-party democracy must survive no matter the different odds we may face in the course of returning Nigeria on the right course,” he wrote.

Dickson added that he had been encouraged by the growing participation of citizens in the affairs of the NDC, noting that people from different backgrounds continued to register, join and actively engage with the party.

“I have watched with immense pride and satisfaction that, while I laboured here with my colleagues to strengthen and build our party nationally, droves of leaders and citizens, men and women, young and old, have continued to troop out to register, join, and actively participate in the affairs and activities of our party,” he added.
