More than 400 retired workers of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) have appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru to intervene in the payment of their outstanding pensions and gratuities, lamenting years of hardship since leaving active service.
The retirees, under the aegis of the Association of Retired Staff of Ebonyi State University, said many of their members had continued to endure severe financial difficulties due to the non-payment of their retirement benefits.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the association’s leadership urged the governor to direct the relevant authorities to immediately settle the outstanding entitlements, describing the situation as both painful and unacceptable.
The retirees said several of their members had died without receiving their gratuities, while others were battling health challenges and struggling to meet basic needs because of the prolonged delay in payment.
They acknowledged the Nwifuru administration’s efforts in addressing workers’ welfare but appealed for similar attention to be extended to retired university employees.
The group maintained that prompt payment of pensions and gratuities would not only ease their hardship but also restore hope among retired public servants who devoted years of service to the state’s education sector.
They appealed to the governor to treat the matter as urgent, expressing optimism that his intervention would bring relief to hundreds of affected retirees.
