2027: Peter Obi Plans Dual Transmission of Election Results

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has disclosed plans to establish an independent system for transmitting election results from polling units to his team’s situation room during the 2027 general elections.

Obi disclosed this in an interview with Arise TV, explaining that the arrangement would enable his team to independently receive, monitor and verify results as they are recorded at polling units.

The former Anambra State governor said the system would operate alongside the official transmission of results through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We must make sure that at every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly.

“And we will have even a dual transmission so that as it’s going to the proper designated INEC portal, it’s also being transmitted where the people can see it,” he said.

Obi explained that the proposed arrangement would ensure that his team had its own record of results generated at polling units, which could be compared with figures transmitted through INEC’s official system.

He rejected the suggestion that the plan amounted to establishing a parallel result-transmission system, saying the objective was simply to ensure that the correct results from polling units were independently monitored.

“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our own situation room the correct results,” Obi stated.

The NDC candidate said other organisations could also develop similar monitoring systems, arguing that multiple independent records would make it more difficult for results that did not originate from polling units to be presented as genuine.

“And I’m sure there are so many other agencies that intend to do the same thing. So we’re not going to have a situation where somebody pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit. Our task is to make sure that the right things are done,” he said.

Obi maintained that Nigeria could conduct a simple, free and transparent election, citing Ghana and other countries as examples.

He said the ultimate objective of the proposed system was to ensure that votes cast by Nigerians are properly counted, recorded and reflected in the final results, as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
