2027: Over 6,000 NDC Members Defect to PDP in Enugu

More than 6,000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defectors, led by Mr Godwin Obasi, were received by the leadership of the PDP in Enugu, the state capital, on Saturday.

Obasi said the group decided to leave the NDC following what he described as the party’s choice of unpopular candidates for various elective positions.

He said the defectors were drawn from all 260 wards and 17 local government areas of the state.

“We decided that we were going to join the PDP. It is our right and choice. So, after he congregated, we are here today to officially join the PDP,” Obasi said.

Receiving the new members, the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, assured them that they would be accommodated in the party.

Nnaji alleged that the current administration in the state had failed to fulfil its promises, calling for collective efforts by residents to change the situation.

He also criticised the state government over its revenue-generation policies, alleging that residents were being subjected to excessive taxation without corresponding development.

Nnaji further claimed that pensioners and other categories of residents were being owed payments, while questioning the use of funds received by the state from the Federal Government.

He also alleged that the state’s internally generated revenue had been raised at the expense of residents’ welfare, a claim that would require verification from the relevant authorities.

A PDP chieftain, Chief Basil Ani, described the defection of the over 6,000 NDC members as a significant boost for the party as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development adds to the series of political realignments taking place in Enugu State as parties strengthen their structures, mobilise supporters and prepare for the forthcoming elections.
