Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has described the former vice president as the leading figure in national political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okonkwo made the assertion in a post on his X account on Friday, praising Atiku’s experience in government and his record in economic management.

He recalled that Atiku served as vice president under former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007 and said the former vice president headed the country’s economic team during the period.
“Atiku is now the clear leader whom other candidates are following in every important national discourse,” Okonkwo wrote.
He further claimed that Atiku helped build what he described as Nigeria’s strongest economy during his time in office, citing fuel subsidy payments and the repayment of the country’s external debt.
The ADC campaign spokesman also defended Atiku’s proposal to restore petrol subsidy if elected president, describing the policy as an effort to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians amid rising living costs.
“Atiku is humane and humble. His promise to bring back subsidy is a reflection of his policy of putting people and their welfare first,” he said.
Okonkwo urged Nigerians to support Atiku’s presidential ambition in 2027, expressing confidence that his leadership would improve the country’s security and the well-being of its citizens.
Atiku’s proposed approach to fuel pricing has generated debate, particularly over how government intervention could reduce petrol costs and ease economic pressure on households and businesses.
The comments come as political parties and their prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with economic management, fuel prices and the cost of living expected to feature prominently in political campaigns.
