ADC alleges bid to erode neutrality of INEC, police ahead of 2027 elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern over what it described as increasing political interference in the operations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The opposition party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, warned that the credibility of future elections could be undermined if institutions expected to remain independent are perceived to be taking sides in partisan politics.

ADC questioned reports suggesting that a transport union linked to political interests could play a role in election logistics, urging the electoral commission to provide clarity on the matter in order to reassure Nigerians of its commitment to transparency and fairness.

The party also expressed concern over the reported attendance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at a political gathering associated with supporters of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that senior security officials should avoid actions capable of creating doubts about their impartiality.

According to the party, electoral and security institutions must be insulated from partisan influence to sustain public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

ADC called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the police commissioner’s participation at the event and take appropriate action where necessary.

It also urged INEC to continue conducting its affairs with transparency and independence, insisting that the credibility of the 2027 general elections would depend largely on the neutrality of institutions responsible for election management and security.
