President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the ongoing African Union summit to discuss the comprehensive strengthening of bilateral ties between their countries.
In a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, their discussions were described as fruitful, focusing on the need to enhance trade and cooperation in various fields.
President Lula da Silva expressed his determination to strengthen bilateral relations, noting that Nigeria and Brazil had once enjoyed a trade volume of more than $10 billion, which has now declined to $1.6 billion.

Lula emphasized the importance of tapping into the Nigerian investment space.
President Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s economic potential and ongoing reforms to improve the business environment.
Tinubu reassured President Lula da Silva of his commitment to fighting corruption and investing in critical sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.
President Lula da Silva acknowledged the similarities between Nigeria and Brazil and expressed his eagerness to restore and enhance their relations.
He emphasized the need for direct flights between Lagos and Sao Paulo and called for collaboration in aviation and other sectors.
Both leaders agreed to work towards a state visit to Brazil by President Tinubu, following an invitation extended by President Lula da Silva.
They emphasized the importance of cooperation in academia, culture, commerce, agriculture, industry, and trade.
President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to deepen ties with Brazil, stating, “We may have missed opportunities in the past, but we now look ahead. Brazil and Nigeria share similarities. Let us forget old mistakes.”
He expressed his commitment to working with Brazil across various sectors for mutual benefit.
