Anambra State has embarked on a new initiative aimed at recovering 100,000 tonnes of plastic waste as part of efforts to combat environmental pollution.
The launch of the operation, known as the ‘All Anambra Community Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge’, took place in Awka.
Mr. Felix Odimegwu, the Commissioner for Environment, announced the initiative during the launch, highlighting its ambitious goal to tackle plastic pollution effectively.
He noted that last year’s similar initiative surpassed expectations by recovering over 10,000 tonnes of plastic waste.
“This year, we have set an ambitious target to recover 100,000 tonnes. Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge 2.0 will span across 197 communities, including urban, semi-rural, and rural areas,” Odimegwu stated.
The commissioner emphasized the initiative’s potential to create 5,000 indirect jobs for Anambra youths and women within three months, focusing on both industrial and environmental sectors.
He praised the previous year’s effort for mobilizing communities and raising environmental awareness, paving the way for greater success in environmental sustainability.
Plastic waste remains a significant source of environmental pollution in Nigeria, and initiatives like this are crucial steps toward a cleaner and healthier environment.
