The Anambra State Police Command has initiated an investigation into reports of widespread phone thefts in Awka metropolis.
Aderemi Adeoye, the State Commissioner of Police, stated that the Command is treating the information with utmost seriousness.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, certain media outlets had highlighted incidents where robbers were reportedly targeting tricycle operators and pedestrians at night, robbing them of valuables, including phones.

Commissioner Adeoye clarified that no such cases had been officially reported to the divisions or the Command by either victims or eyewitnesses. Nevertheless, he has instructed the Divisional Police Officers to conduct discreet inquiries to verify the authenticity of these reports.
In response to the situation, the Police have implemented a proactive security strategy, including the deployment of plain-clothed personnel, to prevent violence and crime in the capital city.
“We are conducting an investigation to verify the claims because we are not overlooking anything. However, as of now, we have not been able to identify any victims or eyewitnesses.
Those aware of the victims are urged to encourage them to come forward,” stated Adeoye.
The Commissioner urged the media to provide accurate reports supported by facts and to avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims that could instill fear in residents.
He assured the public that Awka remains safe and reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring the security of all residents, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
