Barely four weeks after 250 commercial motorcyclists in Abeokuta were given free crash helmets; their counterparts in Ota have had similar gesture extended to them.
Addressing the 250 beneficiaries at a ceremony held at the secretariat of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, the Commander of Traffic compliance and Enforcement Corps, (TRACE) Commander Ayodele Sangofadeji said the gesture was meant to encourage the riders to use crash helmet always.
He said studies have shown that when worn, crash helmets protect the head and prevent injuries during road accidents, he therefore enjoined them to abide by traffic rules and regulations at all times to ensure safety on the highways and reduce incidence of accidents.
Assuring that TRACE would not shirk in its responsibilities of enlightening road users on safety culture, Sangofadeji commended the various companies that donated the helmets, saying “if every member of the public is committed to issues relating to safety on the road, there will be drastic reduction in the number of deaths on our roads”
On his part, representative of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Ota Unit Commander, Wasiu Ogunmefun urged the riders to see the use of helmet as a necessity for ensuring their safety and not a means to avoid the wrath of the law.
Meanwhile, 20 staffers of the Local Government have been inaugurated as TRACE Mayors with a charge on them to make meaningful contributions to ensuring free flow of traffic and safety of lives on roads in the area.
Sangofadeji who gave the charge while decorating them, reminded the new TRACE Mayors who included the Council boss, Mr. Rotimi Rahman not to see their new status as a means of evading traffic laws, but a call to serve and contribute to the “Mission to rebuild”.
Responding on behalf of other inductees, Mr. Rahman pledged they would put in their best to help address traffic challenges in Ota and its environs
