The January transfer window is almost upon us, but it may also offer clubs one last chance to get some cash for one of their out-of-contract players.
Vincent Kompany: How do you replace the impact of a captain, leader and legend like Kompany? You can’t really. The 32-year-old should really get a new deal if he can prove he is injury-free.
Eliaquim Mangala: The France defender cost around £40m when City signed him in 2014 but it hasn’t worked out. He’s still only 27 though and has been linked to Wolves, which could be a good deal for all.
Brahim Diaz: Real Madrid are reportedly set to sign the 19-year-old, who hasn’t managed to make the breakthrough at City.
Daniel Sturridge: Once a seriously talented striker, now injuries have reduced him to a backup role. If a club wants to take a punt on him, they might be rewarded.
Alberto Moreno: The Spanish left-back has grown unhappy with his bit-part role but he’s not better than Andrew Robertson so he’ll likely depart. Barcelona were rumoured to be interested but Sevilla are too.
Lazar Markovic: Loan after loan have followed the winger since he landed at Anfield in 2014. This time, having been with the U23s recently, he’ll depart for nothing and won’t come back.
MAN UNITED: This is A LOT of players… *Option of another year included (many of which will be triggered.)
*David De Gea: The best goalkeeper in the world — United would be mad to let him go and sources said that he added an extra year to his deal last week.
*Anthony Martial: Probably the most important of the lot now, the France winger has plenty of potential but hasn’t seen eye-to-eye with Jose Mourinho. He would have a lot of suitors if United don’t add the optional extra year (which they surely will.)
*Antonio Valencia: The captain also has the option of another year, but at 33 isn’t getting any younger.
*Chris Smalling: Mourinho wants a new centre-back and Smalling may pay the price…
*Phil Jones: Or it could be Jones. Neither have massively impressed and it’s not difficult to imagine them both moving on.
*Matteo Darmian: The versatile Italian will surely be put out of his misery in January and be allowed to head back to Serie A, rather than have an extra year added. If he doesn’t, then they’ll keep him as United hate to lose players for nothing.
*Andreas Pereira: Impressed in fits and starts, but has struggled to hold down a regular place. Arsenal were rumoured to be keen, but United are likely to hold onto him for now.
*James Wilson: Spent his most recent loan spell at Aberdeen. The striker needs to give it up and find another club.
Ander Herrera: A return to Athletic Bilbao has been rumoured, as his extra year was triggered last season, but though they are in talks over another extension, United might want to cash in now.
Juan Mata: Hard to see one of the nicest players in the game depart, but talks are ongoing.
Ashley Young: He wants assurances over his role, but will stay and sign a new deal.
ARSENAL: Ramsey leads the way out
Aaron Ramsey: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United… there’s not many big clubs who haven’t been linked with the 27-year-old midfielder. Arsenal made their feelings clear by retracting a contract offer and he’s now set to join a major rival in Europe.
