The All Progressives Congress (APC) has a significant challenge ahead of it: choosing a new National Chairman to take over for Abdullahi Adamu.
Adamu and Iyiola Omisore, the APC’s National Secretary, resigned without giving any explanation for their decision a few days ago.
The party’s NWC accepted their resignation and promoted Senator Abubakar Kyari, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), to the position of interim Chairman.

Adamu is rumoured to have had a chilly relationship with President Bola Tinubu throughout his time in office, which came to light when he publicly disavowed the Principal Officers list that had been submitted to the National Assembly.
However, the Progressive Governors Forum has publicly backed the new executives.
The APC’s former national chairman had previously stated that the party’s NWC had not seen the list that was delivered to Congress.
From what I can gather, the Senate and House of Representatives have made some pronouncements, but this is all just speculation on the part of the web media.
“The national headquarters of the party, the NWC, has not given any such information or communicated about the choice of offices,” Adamu stated.
APC has insisted there is no crisis within the ruling party despite the confusion.
In order to replace Adamu, President Bola Tinubu is rumoured to have reached an agreement with the party’s governors and settled on Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State.
Now that Adamu’s time as APC National Chairman has come to an end, other candidates have risen to take his place.
Al-Makura Tanko
Some influential people in Nigeria have suggested that Tanko Al-Makura, a former senator from Nasarawa South, should succeed Adamu.
It has been suggested that Al-Makura, a former governor of Nasarawa State, has the necessary qualifications to lead the APC.
Former state party chairs from the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change praised the outgoing governor for his ability to bring people together.
They claimed that the rise of Al-Makura would strengthen party unity.
The Forum for State Chairmen of the Defunct CPC is of the considered opinion that Al-Makura is the ideal hand for the vacant seat,” the group said in endorsing Al-Makura for the job of APC National Chairman.
After the recent departure of the APC’s National Chairman, it became clear that a new leader would have to be found to fill the position.
They say that Al-Makura has shown great leadership qualities throughout the years, making him an ideal candidate to head the ruling party.
Ebute Ameh
He represents the North Central region of Nigeria and is the sixth President of the Nigerian Senate in the Third Republic.
After Adamu stepped down as National Chairman of the APC in July 2023, Ebute announced his intention to fill that role.
Ebute has stated that he is willing to make the same kind of personal sacrifice that he and President Bola Tinubu made back in the military’s glory days in order to help the APC succeed.
A. Lalong, Simon
It is widely speculated that the former governor of Plateau State has his sights set on becoming the next APC national chairman.
It has been rumoured that the ruling party may zone its National Chairmanship to the North Central region, where both Ebute and the previous APC presidential campaign director-general are from.
A.G. Abdullahi
Recently, the two-term governor has been in the spotlight as a possible successor to Adamu.
The president, Bola Tinubu, is reportedly on board with the idea of replacing Adamu with Ganduje.
According to Hilliard Eta, a former interim National Chairman of APC, Tinubu has not yet announced his choice, despite the rumours to the contrary.
The former South-South Vice Chairman of the National Working Committee remarked in an interview with the media, “I’m conscious of the sensibilities of Nigerians towards zoning.”
“I am aware of the requirements of our party’s constitution, but I am also aware of Mr. President’s role as the leader of our party.
I humbly submit to Mr. President’s position on the National Chairmanship and pledge my full support to anyone he chooses. This President will sell the best interest of the party.
“Mr. President has not yet decided, but I understand there will be a NEC meeting, where I anticipate he will reveal his preference.”
Former National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena also expressed concern about how the party’s leadership would be established.
Nabena was perplexed as to why the party was considering re-zoning the position of National Chairman from North Central to the Northwest.
It was designated for the North Central region, but they want to move it to the Northwest, so they may bring anybody they like.
It’s fine if they want to do that, but the party will keep fighting until they do the right thing, Nabena said.
