In a recent interview with Channels TV, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, declared that securing victory in Nigerian elections extends beyond the mere act of casting ballot papers.
Doguwa, the former majority leader of the House of Representatives, offered his insights while responding to the controversy surrounding the Kano State Gubernatorial elections.
He stressed that, in a democratic setting like Nigeria, various factors, including rules and regulations, play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of an election, emphasizing the crucial adherence to the rule of law.

“When you ask me about what is going on in Kano, the going on is usual.
Kano has always been a progressive, proactive state in terms of politics and ideology,” remarked Doguwa.
He elucidated further, stating, “Winning an election can be contested under the laid down rules and regulations provided in the electoral act and in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It is also part of what you must abide by to win a free and fair election.”
Doguwa underscored that free and fair elections encompass more than just counting ballots, noting that even after the votes are tallied, challenges such as alleged illegal votes may arise.
The background to Doguwa’s comments involves the March 18 gubernatorial poll in Kano State, where Abba Yusuf of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) was initially declared the winner.
However, both the election tribunal and the Appeal Court have nullified the election, citing the governor’s alleged lack of qualification to run for the poll.
