Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has stated that Nigeria owes the Southeast an additional state.
Igbokwe made this assertion in response to renewed calls for the creation of more states in the Southeast region.
Posting on his Facebook page, Igbokwe wrote, “Nigeria is still owing the Southeast an additional one state and one governor.”

His comments come as the bill seeking to create Adada State passed its first reading in the Senate on Tuesday.
The bill, cited as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482),” was sponsored by Senator Okey Ezea, who represents Enugu North Senatorial District. Ezea stated that the bill aims to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution to facilitate the creation of another state in the Southeast region.
In a related development, a bill for the creation of Etiti State passed its first reading in the House of Representatives.
If enacted, Etiti State would be formed from parts of Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi States.
The proposal was presented by five members of the House: Amobi Ogah, Miriam Onuoha, Kama Nkemkama, Chinwe Nnabuife, and Anayo Onwuegbu.
According to the proposal, Etiti State would comprise 11 Local Government Areas selected from the aforementioned states, with Lokpanta designated as the capital city.
