The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that there will be no automatic ticket for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State ahead of the November 16, 2024, governorship poll in the state.
APC’s national spokesman, Felix Morka, made this declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday.
He emphasized that the APC is a democratic party, and anyone seeking nomination must earn it.
Responding to a question about whether Aiyedatiwa would be given the right of first refusal ahead of the party’s primary for the November poll, Morka stated, “We are a democratic party; we don’t give anything to people; people have to justify and earn it.”
Morka further explained that the suitability and qualification of candidates are subject to the democratic decision of the party members who will participate in the primaries, whether direct or indirect.
Regarding the issue of zoning the governorship ticket in Ondo State, Morka stated that the party has yet to engage in discussions about zoning and would communicate with the people if and when such discussions occur.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who previously served as Ondo deputy governor, assumed the position of the substantive governor of the South-West state on December 27, 2023, following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already scheduled the Ondo State Governorship Poll for November 16, 2024, pending any last-minute changes.
