The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has taken a swipe at the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the defection of Suleiman Abubakar Gummi to the APC.
Gummi, who was elected under the PDP in 2023 to represent the Bukkuyyum/Gummi federal constituency in the House of Representatives, recently joined the APC along with his supporters.
Addressing journalists in Gusau, APC State Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris Gusau stated that Gummi’s defection highlights internal issues within the PDP.
“We are not surprised that the lawmaker decamped to APC with his teeming supporters because Governor Dauda Lawal is not a politician but a businessman,” he said.
Gusau further emphasized that Gummi’s defection could impact the PDP’s prospects in the 2027 general elections, noting that Gummi is a key political figure in the Bukkuyyum/Gummi constituency.
“We will soon arrange an official welcome for him into the APC fold,” he added.
Criticizing the PDP’s leadership approach, Gusau said, “The PDP government should accept that their leaders act as rulers, not democratic leaders.”
He expressed concern over the centralized nature of the PDP administration in Zamfara, asserting that such governance does not align with democratic principles.
He claimed that numerous PDP chieftains and public office holders had been sidelined without cause, leading to dissatisfaction within the party.
Concluding his remarks, Gusau urged APC supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the APC is prepared to contest with the PDP in the 2027 campaigns to demonstrate its political strength.
