The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State has announced the zoning of the Ebonyi South senatorial seat to Onicha Local Government Area. This decision was made public on Tuesday.
The move comes after Austin Umahi, the younger brother of the Minister of Works and former governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, declared his interest in the upcoming rerun election scheduled for February.
Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone comprises five local government areas. Among these, Ohaozara LGA is the base for the Minister of Works, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, and a Senior Special Adviser to the President.

Afikpo North is home to the deputy governor and a member of the House of Representatives. Edda LGA hosts the State Party Chairman, while Ivo LGA is represented by a member of the House of Representatives.
Onicha LGA, however, does not have any high-profile politicians or public officeholders.
Based on this background, the APC leadership in Ebonyi State has decided to allocate the senatorial seat to Onicha LGA following David Umahi’s resignation, as he now serves as the Minister of Works.
Stanley Okoro Emegha, leading the party’s leadership, explained in a statement released to the press in Abakaliki that the decision to zone the senatorial seat to Onicha LGA aims to uphold justice, equity, and fairness for the people of the local government area.
The statement reads in part: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with relevant provisions of our laws, and the President of the Senate, declared the seat of Sen. David Nweze Umahi vacant, following his resignation from the 10th Senate to assume the role of Minister of Works.
The vacant position belongs to the All Progressives Congress, Ebonyi South Senatorial District. It is in the interest of justice, equity, and fairness, as envisioned by the leader of our great party, that the vacant seat of Ebonyi South Senatorial District be zoned to Onicha LGA of Ebonyi State.”
