Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, played a major role for her Arsenal side as they defeated Chelsea 1-0 to win the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.
Danielle Carter’s first-half curler was all that Arsenal needed to claim a record 14th FA Cup title in a game watched by 32 000 cheering fans at Wembley.
Arsenal Ladies almost scored in the first minute as Oshoala’s pass found Carter but her effort fell on top of the roof of the net much to Chelsea’s delight.
The Nigerian was soon in the thick of things as she wriggled past three Chelsea defenders but scuffed her shot.
Carter, who won the Player of the Match award then put Arsenal ahead in the 17th minute with a fantastic finish.
Oshoala threaded a pass through to Carter who took on three Chelsea defenders before curling the ball from 20 yards into the net to give Arsenal the lead.
Chelsea could not get into their strides as Arsenal dominated the game for long stretches in the first half.
Oshoala missed another glorious chance to score when she could not make hay in a one-on-one situation with Chelsea’s goalkeeper.
The second half started like the first with Arsenal creating a couple of chances early on but Oshoala and Carter were wasteful in front of goal.
Chelsea got back into their elements and mounted pressure on Arsenal’s defence with Ji, Kirby and Davison all prodding to no effect.
Arsenal Ladies were on their toes at the tail end of the game but held firm till the end for a record 14th Cup title.
