Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed support for the planned demonstration calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Atiku, in a post on Thursday, said Kanu’s continued detention despite court orders was “an open sore on the nation’s conscience” and a violation of the rule of law.
The protest was initiated by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, who urged Nigerians to gather in Abuja to demand Kanu’s freedom.

Kanu has remained in detention since his rearrest in Kenya and repatriation to Nigeria in 2021, facing terrorism-related charges before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Atiku condemned the government’s defiance of judicial directives granting Kanu bail, describing it as an “abuse of power and an assault on justice.”
“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a stain on our belief in the rule of law,” Atiku said.
“Defying court orders that granted him bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice. I, therefore, lend my voice in full support of the campaign led by @YeleSowore for his immediate release or due prosecution.”
The former Vice President added that Nigeria risks deepening its wounds if it continues to ignore Kanu’s case.
“We fail as patriots if we allow Kanu’s case to fester as yet another wound this nation refuses to heal,” Atiku added.
