Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has declared that he will support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during its 2026 primaries, regardless of whether he secures the ticket or not.
Atiku, who is one of the key figures in the coalition movement, made the declaration on Saturday while addressing party members at a ceremony in Lagos organised to welcome new defectors into the ADC.

The event saw the defection of prominent members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) into the ADC.
They were formally received by the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside Senator Kolawole Ogunwale and the Lagos State ADC Chairman, Mr George Ashiru.
Atiku, who was represented at the gathering by Prof. Ola Olateju, stressed that the party’s presidential candidate would be determined solely through a transparent and democratic process.
“It is not a thing we can predetermine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support,” he said.
He further assured that all aspirants would be given a level playing field, emphasising that the party would not impose any candidate on its members.
According to him, the eventual winner of the ADC presidential primary would not only represent the party but also reflect the collective aspirations of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Currently, the three frontrunners for the ADC presidential ticket include former governors and past presidential contenders: Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar himself.
Atiku’s remarks come amid growing anticipation within the opposition bloc as parties reposition themselves to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
