The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disowned the Labour Party’s (LP) National Convention held on Wednesday in Anambra State.
Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, made this known in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
Oyekanmi stated that INEC did not monitor the convention and declined to provide further details on why it was not monitored.

The LP had initially planned to hold the convention in Umuahia, Abia State, but later shifted it to Nnewi, Anambra State, a decision communicated to INEC according to Mr. Kehinde Edun, the LP National Legal Adviser.
Edun explained that the party had duly informed INEC about the change in venue and date, asserting the party’s right to choose any venue for its convention.
Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 stipulates that political parties must give INEC at least 21 days notice of conventions, congresses, conferences, or meetings, including those for merger, electing executive committees, governing bodies, or nominating candidates.
