The camp of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has questioned the Federal Government over the promised reduction in transport fares scheduled to take effect in October 2026.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, raised the issue in a post on his verified X account on Thursday, October 1, 2026, asking where the promised nationwide reduction was on Independence Day.

Ibe recalled that President Bola Tinubu had earlier said Nigerians would begin to benefit from lower transportation costs from October 2026.
He questioned whether there was any measurable reduction in transport fares nationwide as announced by the President.
The former vice president’s aide also criticised the administration’s implementation of its Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, programme, acknowledging reported reductions on some routes but arguing that the impact had not yet extended nationwide.
According to Ibe, the government’s CNG programme had expanded refuelling infrastructure to 23 states, while full coverage of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory remained a target.
He said the limited coverage raised questions about the extent to which the programme could deliver the promised nationwide reduction in transportation costs.
Ibe further used the development to criticise the Tinubu administration, saying Nigerians continued to face economic difficulties despite the government’s assurances on improving living conditions.
The comments come amid continued political debate over the impact of the Federal Government’s economic policies and the rising cost of transportation across the country.
