The Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Jibrilla Bindow, has disclosed his reasons for dumping former Governor Murtala Nyako’s camp and pitched tent with former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Governor Bindow, who was elected governor under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) was widely regarded as a stooge of Mr. Nyako, who was impeached in controversial circumstances in 2014.
According to the governor, his decision to switch loyalty from Nyako to Atiku was because of a lofty cash donation the former vice president made to his governorship campaign.
He made the disclosure when he hosted indigenes of Jimeta at the Government House, Monday.
“I shifted loyalty to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar because of the N500 million he gave to support my governorship campaign”, Bindow said. “During the campaign, Nyako and his son Abdulazziz were in London. I have no regret over my decision”.
Mr. Bindow also fingered some “powerful politicians” in the state as being behind the attempt to smear his image because of refusal to do their bidding.
“Apart from the money from the headquarters, nobody gave me ten naira during the campaign. The former Vice President asked me if we had any financial problem. So, I called the party secretary, Abdullahi Bakari, who put our demand at N300 million to Mr. Atiku Abubakar. It was after the submission that Atiku sent me half a billion naira through Jauro”, the governor stated.
It is unclear whether the governor disclosed the huge donation made by the former vice president to his campaign as required by law.
The Electoral Act prohibits individuals from making election contributions above N 1million. [ADSG]
