In a compelling address during the Bauchi State University’s maiden convocation, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, called on the Federal Government to undertake comprehensive restructuring before the year 2027.
During his lecture titled ‘Safeguarding Nigeria’s Future: Prioritizing Citizen’s Welfare and Security Amidst Challenges,’ Jega emphasized that Nigeria risks being labeled a failed state if it fails to address the structural, systemic, and value orientation challenges currently facing the nation.
“The profound challenges bedeviling Nigeria are structural, systemic, and related to value orientation,” Jega remarked, advocating for evidence-based constitutional reforms.

He stressed the importance of decentralizing powers and resources from the federal level to empower state and local governments, ultimately enhancing citizen welfare and security.
Jega further recommended amendments to the Electoral Act to tackle systemic and governance challenges, dismissing the need for creating additional states.
Instead, he proposed a strategic decentralization of resources as a measure to reduce the overall cost of governance in the country.
