The African Union (AU) has lifted its suspension of Gabon, months after the Central African country was ousted from the continental bloc following a military coup in August 2023.
Brice Oligui Nguema, the leader of the coup, had pledged a return to civilian rule after a two-year transitional period.
He was recently elected president with over 94 percent of the vote, a development the AU said marked progress in the country’s political transition.

In a post on X, the AU’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department said the Peace and Security Council reviewed Gabon’s political developments and deemed them “generally successful.” Consequently, Gabon has been cleared to resume full participation in AU activities.
“The Peace and Security Council of the African Union has lifted the suspension of the participation of the Republic of Gabon in all activities of the AU,” the AU said in a statement.
Welcoming the announcement, President Oligui Nguema expressed gratitude in a Facebook post, stating: “This return is much more than a symbol: it is recognition of our collective commitment to rebuilding our country in peace, order and dignity.”
InfoStride News recalls that Gabon was suspended from the AU after Oligui Nguema led a military takeover that removed long-time President Ali Bongo from power. The Bongo family had ruled the oil-rich nation for 55 years.
The newly adopted constitution expands presidential powers and is seen as part of Nguema’s efforts to stabilize the country and strengthen governance.
The AU’s decision to lift sanctions follows diplomatic efforts by the Gabonese leader, including a meeting last year with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, during which Nguema requested support for Gabon’s reintegration into the AU.
Despite its substantial oil wealth, Gabon continues to grapple with high unemployment, frequent power and water shortages, and mounting public debt, challenges the new administration has vowed to tackle.
