There is undoubtedly a quality player somewhere within Ross Barkley, but it must be galling for the Everton midfielder to realise that his direct rival in Liverpool red, Philippe Coutinho, spent the Merseyside derby showing him just how far he has to go to before he can live up to the hype. At this level, it’s all about game-changers in the big matches. Coutinho made the crucial difference for Liverpool, but Barkley did nothing but frustrate and fall short for Ronald Koeman’s team as Everton lost 3-1 and returned to Goodison Park still awaiting their first victory at Anfield since…

Mourinho was not impressed. “You think the game was equal? I can smile win, lose or draw. I am sorry to say, it is a silly question,” Mourinho said. “When the…

We have to improve on that. “When you play away, the other team tries to attack. It’s not easy to play…
Liverpool midfielder Emre Can believes his side are back to their best after the mid-season slump that derailed their title bid. A comfortable 3-1 victory in the 228th Merseyside derby on Saturday made it 10 points from the last 12 and strengthened their spot in the top four. “It has not been secured, but it is our target to play in the Champions League,” Can said. “December, January and February was not our best football but now we are back, we did it in the last couple of games. “It was very important to win that game. There are still…

But they undid all their good early work almost immediately through two pieces of ponderous defending.
