President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed sadness at the explosion which rocked a highly populated motor park in Nyanya, less than ten minutes’ drive from the Abuja city centre killing over 50 Nigerians on Monday morning. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan directed the medical services to do their very best to save the lives of those injured in the explosion. While expressing his “heartfelt condolences to bereaved families”, the president has ordered heightened security in the Federal Capital Territory as a result of the bombings.

A loud explosion was heard this morning in Abuja as a bomb blast hit a motor park in the the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The blast was reported around Nyanya axis of Abuja, beside El-rufai bus stop, near Nyanya bridge, Abuja. Some residents of the FCT said the bomb blast occurred at Nyanya motor park, killing about 200 persons. Casualties have been reported, with injured persons being rushed to the nearby Nyanya General hospital as well as the 50 confirmed dead. Police in Plateau State have arrested a 70-year-old man for defiling a 13-year-old girl in Barkin Ladi Local Government of the state. A medical doctor (name withheld) has been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for alleged impersonation and examination malpractice.
