When news broke earlier today that Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth has been knighted by the Queen of England for his services to comedy and entertainment, not a few Nigerians disbelieved the report.
So we at contacted the official residence of the Queen, Buckingham Palace, for confirmation and we got a speedy response from them.
In a press statement obtained exclusively by us, a spokesperson for the Queen confirmed that Basketmouth received the knighthood in a secret ceremony held last night.
The ceremony held at the Buckingham Palace, where the Queen is recovering from a bout of flu and was witnessed by only palace guards and the Queen’s corgis.
As to why the ceremony was held secretly and why Basketmouth’s name was missing from the usual Queen’s New Year’s Eve honours list, the unnamed spokesperson said Basketmouth was such a special candidate for the honour and a personal favourite of the Queen and her son, Prince Charles.
‘Usually, being made a Knight of the British Empire is the exclusive preserve of British citizens but the Queen decided to give him a historic waiver to grant him this honour.
‘This is the first time in the history of the Empire this has been done and is further testament to amazing dexterity, Basketmouth has displayed with comedy and entertainment.’
Prince Charles in particular has watched DVDs of every Basketmouth standup performance, even the ones that are only available on pirated discs.
The palace however refused to comment on speculation that the knighthood given Basketmouth grants him the powers to call for the arrest and repatriation of those he has publicly feuded with in the past such as OAP Freeze and singer Sean Tizzle.
